The moment EJ Broussard concluded his 35-yard rush into the end zone — his fifth touchdown of the night — a momentous roar erupted from the overflowing bleachers of Mountainside fans. Families cheered and stomped their feet in approval as students began migrating toward the field’s fence, eager to rush the field. It was a Friday-night scene so common to thousands of high school football teams across the nation. Yet, at Mountainside High School in Beaverton, it’s a scene still new to a program that’s in its second year of varsity football competition.

While defeating the Seagulls was a celebratory act in itself for Banks, a bigger, more anticipated task is quickly becoming a reality for the team’s playoff run. Banks has placed itself in strong position to claim its second football state title in a row and become the first Oregon high school to win four consecutive boys state championships in the major sports (football, basketball and baseball).
